clay sculpture of dog

Here are those puppies from Mexico

During my April visit to the Tucson Museum of Art I took photos of the exhibition of small Mesoamerican clay sculptures. I mentioned that puppy dog sculptures were, surprisingly, very popular in the Colima area of Mexico spanning a period of 400 years starting in 100 BCE. But I failed to take any photos of them. Well, here they are now. Plus two other interesting sculptures from this show at TMA.

And, Yes, that one puppy is wearing a human mask and the other has small antlers. I wonder what the story is behind them?

And two more from this exhibition. One a woman, one a man. No special reason to show them except I liked them.

This visit I spent more time looking at and taking photos of the museum’s permanent collection. I will show more in a future post.
