There is the sign. You can see it right in the front window, above. Antigone Books states that they get 100% of their power from the sun. For that reason alone this indie bookstore is worth patronizing.
Other reasons to visit: it has a superb selection of books that are typically more of interest to women. Plus hundreds of cards and postcards. Plus a comfortable reading nook near the back. And to top that off they have Solmate mismatched socks for sale! I sure didn’t seen anything like that at B&N or Bookman’s!
Another true Kindle confession: even with my convenient Kindle I rarely read books that might be considered women’s books–like romances or literature about families and children or astrology books. (I’m more of a sci-fi, dystopian, apocalyptic kind of reader. Well, that’s not entirely true. I love Laura Thasala’s Four Horsemen books.)
Teach baby sign language
But one book caught my eye: How to teach your baby sign language. It wasn’t necessarily intended for deaf babies, but rather as a way to allow any baby to communicate its wants and needs as early as six months old. I’ve since learned that there are a lot of books on this topic.
The other big things that Antigone Books has are two murals facing onto their parking lot. The one of the right, called Imagination Navigation: Sonoran Sea, is by muralist Jessica Gonzales with assistance by Dakin Martin.
Two blocks down 4th Avenue is a place called Book Stop. It’s a used book store, but was closed the day I stopped by so I took a photo through the front window. Looks pretty big. I remember browsing through used book stores when I was in college and found a few treasures I still own decades later.
And then there is an outpost of literacy on the Eastside: Mostly Books. For over 30 years it has sold books in a shopping plaza on Speedway near Wilmot. Now there is a huge Bookman’s four doors away in the same plaza. I hope this charming bookstore survives if only because it was the only bookstore that was celebrating Banned Book Week, which ends tomorrow.
So this brings to an end my tour of mainstream bookstores in Tucson. There are, of course, 3 Christian bookstores, plus those 16 comic book/graphic book stores around town which I have no plans to visit right away.
Now for a shameless plug
2 books I authored are on Kindle and free to Kindle Unlimited members. Working After Retirement and How to Write an Unforgettable Short Memoir. Working After Retirement was a best seller for almost 2 years when it was first published.
