Folkloric dancers in Mexican style

The Best At the Rodeo Festival Were the Folkloric Dancers

True Confession: I’ve never attended the Tucson Rodeo or the Tucson Rodeo Parade, so I decided to go to the Rodeo Festival at Palomino Plaza (where I had never been before) to make up for this series of omissions.

The headline for this post sums up my experience on a lovely warm Saturday here in Tucson. I sat in the shade and watched gorgeous costumed dancers–both male and female–swirling and stomping their feet to Mexican music.

So here goes. First the other group of folkloric dancers who, along with those pictured at the top, are members of a dance school here in Tucson.

Then I’ll show you some of the vendors at this event which was, in part, designed to support animal rescue groups here in Tucson. The two ladies in the photo below support cat rescue through PAWS PATROL.

Other vendors, below, were simply selling things they hand produced. A big cheer for local crafts people!

A special shout out to the painter in the wheel chair who was demonstrating painting at the event. And another cheer for the Girl Scout Cookie sales booth. I bought the Lemon shortbread cookies.

Now as far as Palomino Plaza goes…it’s attractive and has several restaurants and a few stores. I was most interested to look into the windows of Maya Palace, the dress store that advertises often on TV. And every time I see the ads I wonder: “Who in Tucson wears those clothes?” To my eyes the clothing looks pretty much over the top and geared to wealthy women who like flashy clothes. (Not as extreme as those Mar-a-Lago women wear, however!) I still have no answer to that question.

So now I’ve done my Tucson Rodeo activity for the year…or maybe for this lifetime. Oh, one more thing. The Tucson Rodeo Parade organization has a very fine museum of well-maintained or restored old carriages and wagons of historic value. A good place to visit.
