A laughing beaver sculpture surrounded by images of Salvador Dali? Sure. It’s fun. It’s Dali-esk. And, suitable for an Arizona art exhibit, as it echoes the carved wood figures of Mexico. There were other sculptures and images in the Biennial Show that were remarkable, too. Here are just two examples.
The painting below is entitled The Golden Ratio by Kate Hoover and there is something about it that captured my eyes. On the left are three of 9 sea slug sculptures displayed together in this show. (Sorry, I cannot find the artist’s name.) The Biennial Show is definitely worth seeing this year. It ends on September 27th, BTW.
New favorites and Old friends
What comes next are some of my new favorites in the Tucson Museum of Art. I have other favorites, old favorites that are like old friends to visit from time to time, including two remarkable paintings of Shining Path guerillas on another post on this site. (Actually, the artworks in this post may not be new — except to me. I haven’t been to the Museum of Art in a couple of years, I think.)
This sculpture of the women represent each of their tribes. And the warrior sculpture is by Ute Dine Oreland G. Joe
And two more, above, that can only be Art of the Americas.
Then, as I was leaving I was startled to see a large mural at the end of the walkway into the museum. Originally it was going to be at the top of this post, but I learned that it is not part of the biennial, but rather a commissioned site specific mural that continues in place until December of this year. It was painted by Jessica Gonzales with assistance by Dakin Martin.
Add seating so we can enjoy the art
Now, I have one complaint: there are not enough places to sit and look at the art works. I was especially disappointed that the video art in the Biennial had no seating. And that intriguing video was longer than a couple of minutes. I would have loved to see all of it, but gave up and went to the next room. So add seating!!
