Learning how to make ornaments at the Sonoran Glass School

The Sonoran Glass School is bringing stained glass to the masses. Whether you want to make shimmering glass balls or translucent glass Christmas trees, this non-profit school, filled with furnaces, fire and lots of sharp edges will teach you how to do it.

At their Open House on Sunday I saw furnace glassblowing, torching glass, and fusing glass in a kiln. And you could try out each of those techniques at one-day-only prices well below those listed for their classes on their website. The school was absolutely packed with people, many of whom seemed to be lookie-loos. Well, maybe some will come back later and take classes.

An instructor was helping the older man create a blown glass ornament. That pole with the glass on the end is very heavy. You have to be strong to be a glass blower.

After watching all three types of glass work, I decided to try the process that seemed to be the least dangerous: fusing. None of that directly handling fire for me!

Then out behind their big workshop on 18th St. is a “garden”…well, a large open space with lovely glass garden ornaments on display. Here are two of them.
